I think Google could do it, the next pixel book should be a laptop shell which can be connected to a phone through Bluetooth.

The idea of putting phone inside a computer to power it and act like a mouse pad at the same time was a pretty neat idea actually

So when Dex is running on your laptop what's doing the processing? The phone or the laptop? I.e. does it matter if you have a fast laptop or not?

Apple: designs the most powerful, unmatchable SoC in the whole market year after year.
Also Apple: puts that powerful SoC in a phone that's unable to be anything mor than a smartphone.

The atrix could have been successful be it not for terrible pricing that made it a better idea just to buy a netbook instead of a $300 shell that required a separate data plan. Idiots.

I love the fact that you point up when you speak about "The Cloud" as if all our data is magically stored up there!!

This is... a bad take. DeX is good BECAUSE your data is mostly in the cloud. All you need is a screen, and despite your phone being underpowered compared to a desktop, you can offload a lot of computing to the cloud just like Chrome OS does.

DeX is not good. At all
You need a monitor, mice and keyboard or you need a whole laptops which just makes it absolutely useless to use it only as a monitor 🤦🏻‍♂️
The only good concept is made by Razer where you put your phone into a "Laptop" and use the phone as the processing unit and the touchpad.

I think he is missing the point. Yea Chromebooks are cool and everything but the whole purpose of Dex is not to carry around another device nor pay another $500-$1000 to lug around. It is to have something you already own (your phone) and have the ability to merely plug it into the hotel monitor and have a desktop experience. We all know typing for any length of time on a phone is not good. We also know the pain of lugging that extra computer along with us when we are on the road. This is what Dex is all about. So "if I'm going to lug around another device besides my phone" then maybe I should just lug around a more powerful laptop like a macbook pro or Windows Surface that has all the full desktop apps.

Not necessarily. I may want a premium phone but have only a few use cases where a full laptop is required. For instance using word or Excel. I may want a full screen and keyboard for such cases where typing for any length of time on any phone becomes tedious. So do I need to buy a $1000 pixelbook to lug around too with my phone for word and Excel.. I think not. Hooking my note up to the hotel monitor/keyboard would be sufficent

If your phone is your only computer then you don't have to buy two computers. Even more you don't have to carry two computers with you, of the unfolding thing works out! Like I mean, I would love to just have my phone fold out into a table and then attach a keyboard and make it my laptop. I don't think the whole my my phone my laptop is about data storage, I think it's about convenience and economics.
